Since taking home the award for Male Artist of the Year at the West Australian Country Music Awards and unveiling a #1 debut album the Irish man has generated a stir in the Australian music scene. His joyous blend of acoustic tones and pop hooks has seen him likened to hitmakers like Keith Urban and Bryan Adams, with BMA Magazine claiming he “has a Springsteen in his step”.
Jonny’s rugged vocals are certainly reminiscent of the aforementioned legends, yet his music eloquently blends in the fresh and modern. “Some things you’ll lose as you grow, my heart will be the last to go,” he proclaims in the song’s titular moment; a wholesome thought inspired by his journey into fatherhood.
“It’s a song written about the moments after my son was born at the hospital,” shares the singer-songwriter. “How life is as a father and wanting what’s best for your baby as you watch them grow up”.
Like father’s love for a newborn, the words came easily. “It was late at night, and I was finishing some final prep work on a song I was going to take to the recording studio the next morning. Right before I finished, I started to jam on my guitar and mumbled a few lyrics out, which was this nice verse melody. I’d say the whole song from start to finish was out and finished within 20-30 minutes.”
The very next day, Jonny presented his late-night phone-recorded demo to producer Michael Bono (Blink 182, Avril Lavigne) and the two heard instant potential. “We both agreed it was a catchy and wholesome track many can relate to,” recalls Jonny. “We formed a new immediate plan for that day, which was laying down this track while it was fresh and my head.” They opted to keep it simple for the sake of the song’s message. “It’s just guitars and a piano and some percussion and basically just let the story flow.”
When brainstorming ideas for a music video, Jonny decided to reach out to his fans. “Mothers and fathers watching their children grow is something so many of us go through daily, so I reached out publicly to my fans and asked if they’d like to send in their home-made videos and memories.” The result: over 100 heart-warming clips, later weaved together by Jonny.
