Demi Michelle Set to Release Her Second Cover Song “If I Die Young”

After the success of her first cover song, “Homecoming Queen” by Kelsea Ballerini, released in 2022, Demi is ready to share her second, “If I Die Young” by the Band Perry.

“If I Die Young” is scheduled for release on May 12^th and will be available on all major streaming platforms.

“I think of myself as a songwriter first and artist second, so releasing cover songs is a huge decision for me. Now that I’m between projects, since my EP, It Is What It Is, was released in November and I’m recording for my next project, this is a great time to share another cover song.”

Demi has quite the story of why she chose “If I Die Young,” and it goes back to her sophomore year of college. During a vocals class focusing on genre performance, Demi selected “If I Die Young” for her country song. After receiving incredible feedback from her professor and classmates, she was encouraged to perform it at the university’s open mic.

“‘If I Die Young’ became the very first country song I ever played live for an audience, and this was also the first time I accompanied myself with guitar instead of piano. After this open mic, ‘If I Die Young’ has become one of my favorite songs to play at shows.”

Demi’s rendition is unique and captures her artistic style. Opening with only piano and her vocals, the song begins raw and intimate before building into a vibrant record with all live instrumentation. The changes Demi made to the arrangement, from carrying high energy through the bridge to modulating in the final chorus, offer an original foundation for the stylistic choices Demi made when singing the melody and background vocals. Demi believes every song should tell a story musically as well as lyrically. The dynamic variations and song’s progression as a whole highlight this point.

“When I was exploring my rendition with my producer and other musicians, I imagined how I’d take this song to the studio if I had written it. That allowed me to separate myself from the original and record it in a way that felt authentic to me as the artist.”

Since “If I Die Young” is quite a popular song, Demi hopes listeners enjoy her unique spin on this country favorite. She has always loved hearing how other artists covered this song, and now, she has a rendition of her own.
